Our Planning Process

Our planning process for new clients begins with a 2-hour Family, Estate and Legacy Planning Session. At this meeting, Cassandra will carefully guide you through what estate planning entails, and will explain to your exactly what your loved ones would have to do and what would happen to your assets if something happened to you without an adequate plan.

At that point, if you determine that your current plan (or the state’s plan if you haven’t done any planning) does not carry out your wishes for what you would want to happen if something happened to you, and assuming there’s a good fit between you and our firm, we can usually design a new plan for you that day. Occasionally, a second design meeting is needed for more complex matters or if there are a lot of issues to discuss at your planning session.

While we are helping you design the plan that is best for your family, we will discuss our fee schedule and the fee will be based off of the planning level you decide upon (we have three different planning levels to accommodate you and they are all-inclusive, so you’ll never be surprised by the bill).

You’ll leave our office with peace of mind, knowing that your family will be taken care of no matter what happens. Of course, there’s no obligation if you determine that your family would not benefit from this type of planning. Either way, you’ll greatly benefit from the information you’ll be provided at the initial meeting.

The next step in the planning process is to return to our office about a month later to sign your planning documents. Once the documents are signed, your assets will pass to your family based on your wishes in the case of your death or incapacity.

For most law firms, that’s where the relationship ends. Our firm is very different because we view the signing of your planning documents as just the beginning of our relationship with you and your family.

We will meet one more time during this initial planning process for our legacy meeting. The legacy meeting is a very important part of our process because it’s where we: (1) help to ensure your assets are all owned in the right way and beneficiary designations are up to date (because even with the best set of legal documents, if your assets aren’t owned properly, then it’s all been for nothing); (2) record your Priceless Conversation, which allows you to plan for your intangible assets (your values, experiences, insights, stories); and (3) if you have minor kids, we make sure that those people you’ve named to care for your children know exactly what do, if and when something happens.

At that point your foundational plan will be completed. But to help ensure that your plan stays current as your family changes, your assets change and the law changes, we also meet with you at least every three years to review your plan to see if it’s still up to date at no additional charge.

If this type of planning sounds like something you’d want for your family, please contact us at (510) 992-6773 or click here to schedule your no-obligation planning session.
